Inverter Status Lights & Fault Code Matrix

What the lights on Enphase microinverters and the error codes on SolarEdge inverters usually mean, and which ones need a technician.

Enphase IQ7 / IQ8 LED Status Guide

Enphase Microinverters

The status light on each microinverter, visible from under the array:

Flashing Green
Producing and communicating: The microinverter is working and talking to the gateway. Nothing to do.
Normal
Flashing Amber
Producing, not communicating: The microinverter makes power but isn't reporting to the gateway. Check that the gateway is powered and online.
Check gateway
Flashing Red
Not producing: The microinverter doesn't see a normal grid, often because the solar breaker is off or grid voltage is out of range. Check the breaker once.
Check breaker
Solid Red
DC fault: Usually damaged wiring or insulation between the panel and the microinverter. Don't keep resetting it.

SolarEdge Inverter Error Codes

SolarEdge Inverter & DC Optimizers

Common faults and example codes from SolarEdge's troubleshooting guide. The exact code depends on the inverter model and firmware, so check it against SolarEdge's error code list.

2x19 · 8x58 Isolation Fault
Array not isolated from ground: often moisture in a connector or damaged DC cable insulation. The inverter stops producing until it clears. Needs a technician with an insulation tester.
Call a technician
3x11 · 2x96 · 2x97 Arc Fault Detected
Arcing in the DC wiring: the inverter shuts down to prevent a fire. Don't keep resetting it; have the wiring inspected.
Call a technician
2x1F · 8x1F–8x21 AC Voltage Too High
Grid voltage above the limit: usually a utility-side issue, common on sunny afternoons. If it keeps happening, ask your utility to check the voltage at your meter.
Call the utility
2x11 · 8x47 Temperature Too High
Inverter overheating: check that nothing blocks the vents or heat sink and that the unit isn't baking in direct sun. Persistent faults need service.

Roof Leak Repair Under Panels: Detach & Reset

A leak under panels can't be fixed with caulk from the edge: the panels over it have to come off, and the system has to be turned off safely first.

Diagnostic Inspection

Primary Causes of Solar Roof Leaks

What roofers commonly find when they lift the panels:

  • ✕
Mounts without proper flashing: Bolts through the roof sealed only with caulk instead of a metal or molded flashing.
  • ✕
Failed sealant: Caulk that has cracked or pulled away after years of sun and temperature swings.
  • ✕
Cracked shingles or tiles: Often broken by foot traffic during the installation.
  • ✕
Trapped debris: Leaves and needles caught behind the racking that hold water against the roof.
Standardized Workflow

How a Detach and Reset Works

The usual steps when panels have to come off for a roof repair:

01
Shut down and label: Turn the system off and label the panels and wiring so everything goes back in the same place.
02
Remove and inspect: Take off the panels and racking over the leak and check the roofing, underlayment and deck underneath.
03
Repair the roof: Replace damaged roofing and underlayment, and flash each mount properly.
04
Reinstall and test: Put the racking and panels back, test the wiring, and confirm the system produces as before.

Average Cost & Homeowners Insurance Coverage

The cost of a Detach & Reset depends on how many panels have to come off, the roof pitch and the roof material, so get a written quote. If the leak comes from storm damage or a fallen branch, your homeowners insurance may cover part of it, depending on the policy. Ask the repair company for an itemized report; insurance adjusters usually require one.

Support for Orphaned Solar Systems

If your original installation company closed or went bankrupt (SunPower, Titan Solar or Freedom Forever, for example), you are not stranded. Panel and inverter warranties come from the manufacturers, such as Enphase, SolarEdge, Tesla and Qcells, and stay valid as long as the manufacturer is in business.

Another solar company can usually take over: diagnose the fault, file the warranty claim with the manufacturer and restore monitoring. Our city repair pages rank the companies still active in each area. We track 23 installers that closed or went bankrupt, each backed by a news report.

10–25 yr Typical panel and inverter warranties, from the manufacturer
Labor Often not covered once the installer is gone; ask for the cost upfront

Emergency Guides & Rapid Shutdown

If you see sparks or smoke, or the system was damaged in a storm, do this before anyone touches it.

Hazard #1 Immediate Action

Sparking, Smoke or Burning Odors

Call 911 if there is fire or smoke. Don't touch the equipment; if you can reach it safely, turn the AC disconnect near the meter to OFF.

Hazard #2 Water

Water Near Electrical Equipment

If water is reaching the inverter, the electrical panel or wiring, don't touch them while wet. Turn the SOLAR breaker in your main panel to OFF only if you can do it from a dry spot.

Hazard #3 Physical Damage

Hail or Fallen Branches

Damaged panels still make electricity whenever light reaches them. Turn the system off with the rapid shutdown switch or AC disconnect, stay off the roof and keep away from broken panels and loose wires.

How to Turn a Solar System Off

Most home systems have up to three switches. Use the ones your system has:
Rapid shutdown
1

Rapid shutdown or AC disconnect

Usually a labeled switch near the meter. On newer systems, turning it off starts rapid shutdown.

2

Solar breaker

In the main electrical panel, switch the breaker labeled "SOLAR" or "PV" to OFF.

3

Inverter DC switch

On string inverters, turn the DC switch on or under the inverter to OFF. Microinverter systems don't have one.

Solar Repair & Troubleshooting FAQs

Clear answers to common questions regarding diagnostic costs, inverter fault codes, and roof leak repairs.

What should I do if my solar inverter shows a red error light?

A solid or flashing red light on an inverter (such as Enphase or SolarEdge) indicates a system fault—ranging from grid voltage fluctuations to DC ground isolation faults or arcing hazards. First, check if your AC solar breaker has tripped. If resetting the breaker does not clear the error, call a licensed electrician or solar company. Do not open high-voltage electrical enclosures yourself.

How do technicians fix a roof leak under existing solar panels?

Usually with a detach and reset: the technician turns the system off, removes the panels and racking over the leak, replaces the damaged roofing and underlayment, flashes the mounts again, then puts the panels back and tests the system. The cost depends on how many panels have to come off and on the roof, so get a written quote.

What is an 'Orphaned Solar System' and can it be repaired?

An orphaned solar system is an installed solar array whose original installer has gone out of business or no longer services it. Other solar companies can usually take over service: they diagnose the fault, file warranty claims with the manufacturer (Enphase, SolarEdge, Tesla, Qcells and others) and restore monitoring. The manufacturers' equipment warranties stay valid when the installer closes.

How much does a typical solar repair service call cost?

It varies a lot by company and region. Most solar companies charge a diagnostic fee for the first visit and then quote the repair. Ask for that fee upfront, and ask whether it is credited toward the repair. If the faulty part is under manufacturer warranty, the part is free but the labor usually is not unless your installer is still in business.

What should I do in a solar emergency?

If you see sparks, smoke or storm damage, stay off the roof, turn off the system with the AC disconnect near your meter and the SOLAR breaker in your main panel, and call 911 if there is fire. Then call a licensed electrician or solar company to inspect it before turning it back on.
